TEXAS – A new type of security system utilizes artificial intelligence to identify when someone pulls out a gun.

  • Combines AI and surveillance cameras
  • Will notify police in real time
  • Goal to prevent crimes

As gun control is being debated around the world, developers are looking for solutions using technology to combine artificial intelligence and surveillance cameras.

“We looked at the current surveillance security market and realized that everything was really reactive. Nothing actually helped prevent the crime,” said developer Lisa Falzone.

The surveillance cameras are able to detect handguns and alert local police in real time. Artificial intelligence, along with object detection, is used to recognize a gun and send out an alert when someone takes it out.

Business owners are taking notice of the new technology and think it could be beneficial.

“I was actually searching for something that we can use in Trinidad to help reduce the crime. We have a lot of crime,” said business owner Brewster Joseph. “I think it’ll help a lot with police being able to get the guns off the streets.”

While the technology can’t guarantee the prevention of a tragedy, it can help police get to the incidents sooner.

A school in Pennsylvania already uses the security system. Developers say some schools in Texas have shown interest.
