AUSTIN, Texas – The dispute over renaming a popular road is far from over as local businesses are suing the city of Austin over the change.

  • Businesses suing the city of Austin
  • Upset over changing Manchaca to Menchaca
  • Taking the fight to court

Businesses on what was formerly Manchaca Road want to overturn the city's decision to change the street's name to Menchaca. Austin City Council made the decision last month to change Manchaca Road to Menchaca Road.

However, two days before changing the signs people voiced their defiance saying they will continue to fight to keep the original name, in court.

The group, "Leave Manchaca Alone" claims the city did not notify business owners along Manchaca Road of the name change.

According to the group, a new name would be a tedious and expensive change for the businesses. A new street name would mean updating all business documents, and signage.

In October, Austin City Council voted to rename the street in memory of Texas revolutionary Jose Antonio Menchaca. The solider and politician was honored by naming a Travis County street after him. However, his name was misspelled and has been Manchaca Road ever since.

"Leave Manchaca Alone" will have more details on this suit Tuesday afternoon.
