AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police officers will have more discretion to cite people instead of arresting them for certain misdemeanors.

The changes include police shrinking the list of offenses that require arrests.

Austin police officials say that move will have a major impact, since going to jail for low-level crimes can lead to a vicious jail circle.

“That person may have additional financial burdens, that person may have their car impounded that person may lose their job, they may stay in jail for a week to two week because they can’t make the bond,” Austin Police Chief of Staff Troy Gay said. “Just by adding it to the booking sheet adds a consequence I don't think anybody realized or we recognized."

Certain types of driving offenses and graffiti crimes are also eligible for the program.
