AUSTIN, Texas — Austin leaders remain certain the need to boil tap water will end Sunday.
- City officials hopeful boil water notice to end Sunday
- Emergency water restrictions will likely last another week.
- All tests for harmful bacteria and microorganisms have come back negative
However, emergency water restrictions will likely last another week.
The Director of Austin Water Greg Meszaros says they ramped up the three water treatment plants last night to almost normal operations. They've spent the past two days cleaning the filters now that sediment in the lakes is settling, and say the tap water is almost back to normal.
"We are out sampling our system now and working with TCEQ on all of the requirements that we need to do to lift the boil water notice,” Meszaros said. “We are confident that we will be able to do it Sunday, can't guarantee it, but we are working toward that end."
Meszaros says the City of Austin will provide guidelines for the public this weekend on what to do after the notice is lifted.
One things residents can do is run water from each faucet in the home. Residents should also dump out any ice from the ice maker, run a couple cycles, then wash and return the bin, and fill it up for good.
Meszaros says it's important to remember that all of the utility's tests for harmful bacteria and microorganisms have come back negative. Our independent water tests continue to also come back clear.
The City also asks residents to remember to recycle all of these plastic bottles.
