PENDER COUNTY, N.C - Pender County School teachers are getting their classrooms and lesson plans ready for next week as more than 9,500 students will return back to school Monday and Tuesday.

  • It cost $12 million to just to get back in the buildings for next week
  • School officials are currently in discussion of make-up days

However, not everyone is returning with the same mind set. Hundreds of students and their families are displaced and considered homeless from Florence.

“Our young people are coming back to us having experienced some catastrophe. Some have experienced others who have experienced catastrophe and although the curriculum is so incredibly important, the reality is, their social and emotional needs are going to be at a much higher level  of demand for our staff upon return,” says Micahel Taylor, the principal at Heidi Trask High School where 10 percent of their student population will come back displaced.

Superintendent Steven Hill says they will do what it takes to take care of those students and go above and beyond any way they can, including transportation arrangements.  Hill says the schools are still tallying their damage estimates with insurance companies, but it cost $12 million to just to get back in the buildings for next week.

They received $4 million from commissioners and the rest from the North Carolina lottery which is money they will have to pay back once their insurance gets paid out.

Hill says they are currently in discussion of make-up days and are considering three options. The school board wants parents to complete a survey before deciding on a course of action.

“Those options are kind of limited.  You can either take your work days back from student days, you can add minutes to the days, you can do Saturday school or you can extend the year,” Hill said.
