LAKEWAY, Texas - Residents in the Graveyard Point and Hurst Creek Road area of Lakeway were asked to evacuate earlier this week. Those homes are surrounded by water coming up from Lake Travis.

  • Resident Butch West described flooding as the worst since 2007
  • Neighbors banded together to evacuate

"It was a challenge for both of us. We didn't get much notice this time," resident Butch West said.

Butch and Rhonda West and their neighbor Trent Chastain said they've experienced major flooding before in 2007, when Lake Travis reached just above 701 feet.

"This one and the one before are the two worst ones that we've been through. We've had other minor ones but not anything like this," Butch West said.

Butch West and his neighbors had to act quickly after floodwaters started rising higher into their homes.

"What we've been doing - and Trent's been helping out - we've been going back and forth by boat getting stuff off our second floor now that it looks like it might go under also," Butch West said.

Even with half of his home underwater, Butch West has remained resilient.

"It's a God thing. It happens. So there's not anything you can do about it. I guess we could move if we wanted to, but we don't want to," Butch West said.

He said the neighborhood has banded together, with everyone chipping in to help out in any way.

"It's an incredible place to live out here. You're going to be hard-pressed to find anybody that will say anything negative about it other than the fact that from time to time it's a problem we have to deal with to do this. Whether you live at the coast or you live at the lake, it's not a matter of if, it's just a matter of when. We just weren't expecting this one this bad," Butch West said.

Butch West said that he and his neighbors feel fortunate that they've been through this type of situation in the past and that they are praying for those in the Kingsland and Llano areas.
