AUSTIN, Texas -- Parents and community members protested in front of Zavala Elementary Monday afternoon to show their support for the East Austin school.

• AISD chose Sanchez Elementary to receive $25M modernization project
• Parents are scared the decision will lead to the district shutting Zavala down

The rally comes amid fears that Austin Independent School District might make plans to shut it down.

In September, the Austin School Board chose Sanchez Elementary to be the recipient of a $25 million modernization project, passing up both Zavala and Metz Elementary Schools.

Parents are scared the decision will lead to the district shutting Zavala down. All three schools are battling low enrollment, and if they don't raise those numbers they could all be combined into one school. One protester said she went to Zavala herself and now sends her three children there. Her mother is also a Zavala teacher. Another parent said Zavala is the closest school to his home. If the school closes, his daughter will have to travel much farther to get to school.

District officials have not ruled out the possible school closures, but they have said they will work with the elementary schools on marketing campaigns to help boost their enrollment numbers.
