SAN ANTONIO – UPDATE: The recent rain has made the terrain unsafe for significant foot traffic, which has led organizers to cancel the event, which was slated for Saturday, October 20.

Original Story:

Often known for its giant quarry neighboring Loop 1604, Vulcan Materials Company is using their infamous rocky pit to benefit a local organization.

• Vulcan Quarry Crusher Run is hosted by Vulcan Materials Company
• Event benefits San Antonio chapter of Soldiers’ Angels
• Raised more than $12,000 in 2017

On Saturday, the company will host their annual Vulcan Quarry Crusher Run. The race, which begins at the top of the quarry, challenges participants to run or walk down into the bottom of the pit before climbing back up at a steep 8 percent grade.

The race offers two routes. The single crusher is 3.1 miles while the double crusher is 6.2 miles.

“It’s very difficult so it’s very rewarding when you finish the race,” said Katy Boney, race director.

Tickets range between $40 to $50 with proceeds going toward the San Antonio chapter of Soldiers’ Angels. The national nonprofit raises money to provide aid and comfort to men and women in the military.

In 2017, the race raised more than $12,000 and this year organizers hope to surpass that.

“This is just one very small way, on a Saturday morning, to say I’m going to fulfill some of my personal goals but also give back to the [military],” said Jennifer Cernoch of Soldiers’ Angels.
