AUSTIN, Texas – A pedestrian is dead after a crash on Interstate 35 in Austin Friday morning, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

The crash happened around 6:31 a.m. on the 6100 block of North I-35 in the northbound lanes, near St. Johns.  

Austin/Travis County EMS tweeted that the man in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway was shut down for several hours, but reopened at 9:15 a.m. While I-35 is back open, traffic is still reportedly backed up. 

It is unclear why the man was walking on the highway. Police said if drivers see a person trying to cross the highway, they should call 911 immediately.
