AUSTIN, Texas -- A math teacher at Bowie High School is in jail accused of sexually assaulting a student.

• Police said suspect assaulted student as many as five times
• Police say no other students were involved

Police say Erica Dinora Gomez sexually assaulted a student at Bowie High School as many as five times but her arrest didn’t come until after the victim’s mother found explicit messages in her son’s phone.

“I will say this where there’s a will there’s a way and kids will get into and create accounts without the parents knowing and stuff like that so it’s just a matter of open dialogue and continuing to work with your kids to find out what they are using,” said detective Brandon Poe of the Austin Police Department.

Victim rights advocates say there’s a growing problem of improper relationships between educators and students which have lasting impacts.

"[It has] devastating consequences on a student’s mental health, physical health, interest in attending school, long-term consequences,” said Senior Director Barri Rosenbluth of the SAFE Alliance's Expect Respect program.

Rosenbluth said there are red flags parents can look out for.

“Parents may notice that students are spending an inordinate amount of time with a particular teacher. Either getting phone calls or texts or communications from a teacher,” she says.

Advocates say it’s also important for schools to improve faculty training.

“So that teachers and other school personnel know that it’s their responsibility to speak up and to bring concerns to the administration if they’re aware of colleagues who may be crossing the line,” she said.

Bowie High School's principal said Gomez has been placed on administrative leave. She's currently in jail on a $75,000 bond. Police say no other students were involved.
