AUSTIN, Texas -- Texans will get a chance to vote for the next state comptroller in November. The job involves keeping track of the state's books and forecasting how much money lawmakers will have to spend during the biennium.

Republican incumbent Glenn Hegar is trying to hold on to the seat he won in 2014. But he's got a Democratic challenger looking to cause an upset, though she has an uphill battle.

Joi Chevalier is an Austin entrepreneur who has experience in corporate planning and product development.

Chevalier said she would use the office to guide lawmakers to close tax loopholes and adopt a fairer and more equitable revenue mix that would ease pressure on residential property owners.

“Certainly making the office more efficient,” Chevalier said. “But additionally, it’s not to just do the standard work of certifying the budget, tax revenue, but it’s also to be innovative and say how do we actually have good school finance reform? To be engaged in that conversation.”

Libertarian Ben Sanders will also be on the ballot.
