New Braunfels, Texas --  New Braunfels ISD unveiled enhancements to the two middle school athletic fields in the city.

The $2.5 million improvements include stadium lighting and artificial turf.

The New Braunfels Economic Development Corporation 4B Board authorized the funds for the upgrades. Four years ago, a partnership between the city and New Braunfels ISD was formed to address the lack of youth sports facilities. A city consultant suggested utilizing the middle schools' fields since the property was there, including concession stands, bleachers, and parking.

All of the city's youth sports leagues will be able to play on these fields. Currently, organizations like the New Braunfels Youth Soccer Association are playing on grass fields like the HEB Sports Complex that have a lack of parking, space, and availability.

"There hasn't been a lot done in quite a few years in regards to keeping up with the growth of New Braunfels for youth sports facilities. This is going to take a little bit of that pressure off," said Jim Streety, New Braunfels ISD athletic director.

Streety noted that in a very short time there will likely be a lot of kids making use of these fields.

"It was a slam dunk because it was good for everybody. It was good for us, it was good for the city. It was especially good for our youth," Streety said.
