AUSTIN, Texas – It has been 17 years since the Sept. 11 terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people when the World Trade Center's famous Twin Towers in New York City were hit by hijacked airplanes, changing the nation forever.

Several events locally and nationwide will honor the lives lost.

President Donald Trump will be speaking at a memorial service in Shanksville, Pennsylvania Tuesday morning, along with First Lady Melania Trump. The location is where United Flight 93 went down. This year, a new tower is dedicated to honor the victims, who stormed the cockpit to try to stop the hijackers.

In Austin, the Firefighters Association will hold their annual memorial to remember 9/11 victims. The event will take place at Buford Tower downtown. The ceremony will include the Honor Guard, Emergency Services Pipes and Drums Association.

There will be a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m. marking the time first plane hit the Twin Towers 17 years ago.
