AUSTIN, Texas — One man is in the hospital after an Austin police officer-involved shooting in North Austin.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Manley, around 10:40 p.m. Saturday, police were called out to a convenience store on North Lamar on an aggravated robbery call. During the investigation, police were able to identify a man and a vehicle at a motel at the 8300 block of Interstate 35 matching the description of the suspect and what he was driving.

The officer who located the vehicle called for backup. When backup arrived they made a plan to approach the man for further investigation.

Police say, as they approached the man, he tried to evade them. A sergeant and an officer observed the man reach into his waistband for a firearm, and they fired their weapons at the man.

EMS transported him to a local area hospital. Police say he went into surgery and was in stable condition.

APD identified him as 51-year-old Glenn Austin Miles.

Police say they did recover a firearm at the scene of a shooting.

The officer involved in this shooting is Officer James Eichenholz. He has been with the department for six years and currently assigned to APD’s violent crimes task force. The sergeant involved in this shooting is Sergeant Gregory White. He has been with the Department for 21 years and is currently assigned to APD’s violent crimes task force.

Both are on administrative leave as is protocol.

Police say they believe the man injured during the shooting may be connected to a series of aggravated robberies in the city.
