CASTLE HILLS, Texas – The City of Castle Hills is now utilizing a social networking site to keep the community informed.

Some neighbors said they are joining NextDoor to keep up with city news and updates from the city's police department. The department has been pushing for more people to join.

Police have been posting alerts, including one Tuesday night when a suspect escaped from police custody.

The department said in some cases the app can be easier and more effective than 911 calls.

"Immediately we recognized that folks were chattering about it. It was going to be our best opportunity to seek input to see if anyone saw suspicious activity or suspicious person," said Castle Hills Police Chief Johnny Siemens.

Police say they will continue using reverse 911 calls when a situation like a standoff is happening in a stationary location.
