Mike Siegel is challenging a longtime Republican incumbent in a conservative district.

The Austin Democrat is trying to unseat Congressman Michael McCaul in Texas' 10th Congressional district. It's an uphill battle. McCaul won the district by nearly 20 points in 2016.

The district includes the Austin neighborhoods of Rosedale, Allandale, Crestview and Brentwood where Siegel's signs can easily be spotted. But it's weighted to the Republican-dominated Houston suburbs. Siegel said his strategy is to represent the people and meet them where they are.

"I’m running a real grassroots, block-by-block campaign," Siegel said. "I have organizers who are working in all nine counties of this district and we’re going out knocking on doors, talking to people and organizing town halls to listen to their concerns."

Siegel also said he’s taking cues from Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke’s campaign playbook, going into conservative strongholds as a Democrat.
