FREDERICKSBURG, Texas – Several dogs have died amid the relentless triple-digit temperatures at a popular Texas hiking spot.
Last week, three dogs died at Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg due to heat stroke. Officials are reminding owners that they should leave their pets at home while the summer heat continues.
With high temperatures around 100 degrees, the granite trails will reach 130 degree or higher.
Symptoms of heat stroke:
- Throbbing headache
- No sweating
- Red, hot, dry skin
- Change in mental state
Symptoms of heat exhaustion:
- Faint or dizzy
- Excessive sweating
- Cool, pale, clammy skin
- Muscle cramps
Heat-related illnesses can be prevented on the trail by hydrating, eating healthy snacks, dressing in weather-appropriate clothing, hiking with a friend and planning ahead.
The pink granite dome has brought people to the Enchanted Rock trail for hundreds of years.
