SAN ANTONIO – Students are trading sunscreen and pool towels for books and backpacks as they head back to school.

One week before the Labor Day holiday, San Antonio's two largest districts will open for the 2018-2019 school year.

North Side and Northeast Independent School Districts have a combined total of 170,000 students streaming into classrooms on Monday.

Northeast ISD is implementing new security protocols. In addition to the new clear backpack rule, NEISD students can expect random searches at all their campuses, including metal detector wand-ins. All exterior doors will also be locked and require everyone to buzz-in once class has started.

East Central, Somerset, Southside, Southwest, Harlandale, Medina Valley and Comal independent school districts will also start classes this week.
