SAN ANTONIO -- School buses will now drive around with new safety features and perks for students.

One of the new safety features could end up being costly for drivers.

San Antonio ISD school buses will now have a Stop Arm Safety Camera System provided by American Traffic Solutions. It automatically takes pictures of drivers who pass a stopped school bus.

Starting Oct. 1, SAISD will mail out a $300 citation for any driver that doesn't stop for a school bus. The money goes directly to SAISD. The camera company will invoice the district monthly.

American Traffic Solutions works with 25 school districts in five states including San Antonio ISD and Austin ISD.

"If a vehicle passes a stopped school bus that has their stop arm out and the lights on, then a citation will be mailed to that motorist," said Nathan Graf of SAISD.

"Having the extra cameras makes a whole lot of a difference,” said bus driver Hermelinda Hinojosa.

Drivers in both directions need to come to complete stop or else now a citation will be mailed.

"We're also getting interior and exterior cameras on our buses. Where basically there's not a blind spot at all on the bus,” said Graf.

The cameras will be providing real time data to school offices. For the students, the buses will have enabled Wi-Fi meant for downloading books and doing homework.
