AUSTIN, Texas – Drivers parking illegally in the City of Austin still face getting booted, but they will they will now pay lesser fines after a City Council vote.

On Thursday, Austin City Council approved a measure that would cap how much a company can charge to remove a boot from cars. The cap has been limited to no more than $100.

Up until now, it would cost $150 or more with no limit at all. Texas deregulated the booting industry last year.

In June, Austin police said they receive a high volume of 911 calls about disturbances in parking lots between drivers and booting companies.

The Highway Enforcement Commander Eric Miesse said booting companies are looking to make easy money.

“Even if you’re going to be in there for a minute it doesn’t take but a few seconds to get a boot on,” Miesse said.
