AUSTIN, Texas -- Two gripping legal dramas unfolding hundreds of miles apart Tuesday.

President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, was found guilty on eight counts including tax fraud.

The verdict was part of a one-two punch of bad news for the White House, nearly simultaneously coming as the president's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, was pleading guilty in New York as part of a separate deal with prosecutors.

Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, sits on the House Intelligence Committee. In an interview on Capital Tonight, he said the question now is what will Congress do?

"I believe the Judiciary Committee, in the House and in the Senate, should start an investigation tomorrow morning on the allegations that were made, sworn testimony by Michael Cohen, the president's former lawyer and fixer in court today," said Castro.

Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in relation to the Stormy Daniels deal. Cohen says the payment was made to the former porn star at the direction of then-candidate Donald Trump.

"The fact that Cohen entered a plea agreement today, that Manafort has now pleaded guilty to several crimes, yes, I think that's an affirmation of the [Bob] Mueller investigation and it means that Congress should act to protect Mueller so the President cannot have him removed,” Castro said.

Castro said he believes Mueller won’t take any action on the investigation before the midterms. Click the video link above to watch the full interview with Congressman Castro.
