AUSTIN, Texas – Grades aren’t the only thing on parents' minds as student safety becomes the priority for many schools.

In the Austin Independent School District alone bus drivers will tote students more than seven million miles in a single year. School districts are pulling out all the stops to keep our kids safe.

AISD gets new school buses every year thanks to bond money. All of the school buses have lap belts and now 40 percent have both lap and shoulder belts. Additionally, the buses are equipped with air conditioning, digital cameras, live GPS, and stop arm cameras.

Just two years ago a truck that failed to stop for a school bus hit two students in Austin. Since then, stop arm cameras have been installed on buses across the state.

"This technology is able to take a picture of the license plate of the vehicle that pass our school bus while the loading lights are on and the stop signs are extended," said Kris Hafezizadeh with Transportation and Vehicle Services.

However, even with the added safety measures transportation officials said in 2016 drivers were issued 38,000 citations for failing to stop for the bus stop sign. Transportation officials statewide are advising drivers to pay attention in school zones and when they see buses in the neighborhood.

"It only takes a few seconds, but the few seconds may play with the life of a student," said Hafezizadeh.
