LAKEWAY, Texas -- As wildfires continue across the state, Lake Travis Fire Rescue is working with homeowners to prepare for potential danger.

Pete Martinez has lived in his home along Lake Travis for almost a decade, but this is his first time getting a home ignition zone assessment. Living in a fairly wooded area, he and his family are at risk if a wildfire happens to ignite. Martinez said his neighbors frequently discuss home fire safety.

"The minute we walked in here, we started looking for ways we minimized our fire risk," Martinez said.

Chris Rea walked around Martinez's home to point out any dangers. Rea said embers cause 90 percent of building ignitions.

"It lands on vulnerable parts of the home like in your gutters - if you have a lot of debris, if you have a lot of debris on your roof, if your vents aren't screened appropriately," Rea said.

Rea suggests paying attention to the vegetation near your home, keeping it three to five feet away from the building, as well as establishing space between trees and removing dry plants. Having dry pants near tree roots could cause the fire to travel upward and spread more easily.

Martinez plans to share what he learned from the inspection with his neighbors.

"In my opinion, it's important that we spread the word and educate people," he said. "A lot of people think it's never going to happen to them."
