AUSTIN, Texas — A fake call from a man, threatening to shoot police, sparked a massive SWAT response on Thursday, according to Austin Police.

Police said, about 5 p.m. Thursday they were called to a Northwest Austin apartment complex near Anderson Mill Road.

An Austin Police Department SWAT team was at the location assisting Williamson County deputies. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office described it as a “potentially dangerous situation.”

According to Austin Police Department spokesman William Costello, around 5 p.m. a man called 911. He was distressed and said he was going to barricade himself inside an apartment unit.

Before 8 p.m., when officers made entry into the apartment, it was vacant. The residents of that apartment were located at another location. Investigators say they did not place the call.

Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody tweeted later that the call was a hoax.

Investigators say they need help finding the person who made the call. If you have any information, call the Williamson County Sheriff's Department at 512-943-1300.
