SAN MARCOS, Texas -- San Marcos Police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year.

Police said Matthew Jacob Rodriguez Jr., 27, was shot multiple times in the torso in the parking lot of Park North Condos.

The shooting happened early Tuesday morning outside of Park North condos on Aquarena Springs Drive. A woman found Rodriguez unresponsive in the parking lot around 2:30 a.m.

Paramedics arrived and attempted CPR but he was pronounced dead on scene. Authorities do not have a description of any suspects, yet are currently executing a search warrant following up on a lead.

San Marcos Police Chief Chase Stapp said an early investigation makes authorities believe the incident was possibly a drug deal gone wrong. There is currently no indication of any gang affiliation.

Stapp said he wants the public to know he believes this is an isolated incident

"It's what I would call about normal for San Marcos, one or two a year. We've had good years when we've had none. We've had bad years when we've had five or six. Overall, San Marcos is a safe city and we don't have things like this happen on a regular basis in San Marcos,” said Stapp.

Authorities said that Rodriguez is not a student at Texas State. He is a resident of San Marcos, but police could not comment on if he was a resident of Park North Condos or The Palms.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the San Marcos Police Department’s non-emergency line at 512-753-2108 or call the SMPD Criminal Investigations Division at 512-753-2300.
