BUDA, Texas -- The Hays County Sheriff’s Office on Monday announced an arrest has been made in connection to an Aug. 10 incident in which Carpenter Hill Elementary School in Buda was severely damaged.

The department said that early on the morning of Aug. 10, a man forcibly entered the school and caused between $150,000 and $300,000 in damage.

An investigation and surveillance photos led investigators to 25-year-old James Michael Kerr, of Austin.

Kerr is charged with criminal mischief, arson and burglary of a building, all of which are felonies. Hays CISD said the person responsible damaged a number of windows, computers and copy machines. He also discharged a fire extinguisher in the library and damaged a decorative antique carousel horse.

The department is still trying to establish a motive for the destruction. As of Monday evening, bond has not been set for Kerr.

Hays CISD Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright issued the following statement concerning the arrest:

“I can’t thank our law enforcement friends enough. The men and woman in the Hays County Sheriff’s office are always ready to assist our school, employees and students at a moment’s notice and with any help we seek. They work tirelessly to keep us safe. This case is no different. They have been on the job, investigating this vandalism incident nonstop since it happened. I am happy we have a suspect in custody. Now, we can begin to seek justice and restitution.”
