AUSTIN, Texas -- The Austin Animal Center has the highest numbers of dogs they've seen in two years.

The shelter is currently housing their more than 400 dogs in their usual kennels and in meeting and office space.

"In the summer, we see basically a population surge that's due to a lot of different reasons, vacations, summer parties. People that are watching your dog, don't know their quirks, sometimes they run out the door," said Jennifer Olohan.

The shelter is in dire need of temporary fosters and adopters to make sure they have enough space.

"Take a dog for a week. Take a cat for a week," said Olohan. "That'll give us enough time to try and make some space."
