AUSTIN, Texas -- The Austin City Council heard alternative proposals from local developers for 10414 McKalla Place on Tuesday.

City council is set to vote Thursday on a proposal that would turn the site into a MLS stadium for the Columbus Crew, owned by Precourt Sports Ventures.

Before that vote, local developers were given one last shot to put in their bids for the city owned property. The council heard four proposals from local developers, with focuses ranging from park space to affordable housing.

Some council members believe each proposal's community benefit should be considered.

"What we saw from the developers that presented today was an opportunity to get 200 to 864 units of affordable housing at pretty significant levels of affordability," District 10 Councilperson Alison Alter said.

The proposals were made to counter problems that many in the community have with Precourt’s stadium proposal. Their plan would keep them from paying property taxes and will only require a $1 a year lease, creating economic concerns that drown out any talk of the benefits of an MLS stadium.

"I can’t even begin to weigh those other things if I don’t have the numbers and the details of what I do know are concrete, fiscal implications of choices that we’re going to be making," Alter said.

Precourt's accelerated approval process and proposal hearings two days before the vote have raised eyebrows on the council and the community.

"I am ambivalent to the proposals, but this process is ridiculous," District 6 Councilman Jimmy Flannigan said.
