SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter is currently at maximum capacity and without adoptions, the shelter can’t continue to take animals in need from the public. They have to continue to take in strays, meaning the shelter must make room.

"We are an open intake shelter so when we're full and rescues can't pull from us, and we can't get adoptable animals out the door, unfortunately we're faced with the really hard and heartbreaking task of having to euthanize animals," shelter supervisor Erin McCann said.

To combat the overcapacity, the shelter is holding $30 adoptions for any animal. That’s a third of the normal cost.

"Adoptions have been really slow throughout the summer because we haven't had the amount of adoptions we normally do. We are overflowing with adoptable animals," McCann said.

The summer usually spells trouble for the growing number of felines, because it's kitten season.

"We are desperate for cat adoptions in all honestly. Cat kennels - there's no more kennels for them so they're just wherever we can fit them," McCann said.

Animals are being held in kennels placed in offices and other private areas of the shelter. Some animals are even in kennels together due to the lack of space.

"We had some wonderful rescues from here in the local areas step up that were able to take and clear a few dog kennels. But those dog kennels will fill back up this week if we don't do adoptions," McCann said.

Many of the shelters in Texas see an influx of animals over the spring and summer months, causing a strain on shelter staff.

"We don't have enough staff to maintain that number of animals for a long period of time. It's just really draining. It can be emotionally draining, we're exhausted. We're all doing the most we can possibly do, and there's still more that needs to be done," McCann said.

The adoption special runs till the end of the month. The $30 fee covers a spay or neuter, microchipping, vaccines, and a city license.
