AUSTIN, Texas — Austin ISD is getting into the back to school spirit for its annual back to school bash.

The event informed parents about district and community resources available to kick-off the school year safely.

On Saturday, 4,500 backpacks with school supplies were handed out to students, along with some car seats, glasses, haircuts and wellness screenings.

AISD and city leaders were also there to talk about safety in school zones.

"School buses are going to be out in full force,” AISD Police Chief Ashley Gonzalez said. “We are asking them to keep a safe distance they stop often to pick up and  drop off students. They need to respect the flashing lights and the flashing light when the arm is out. We are asking do not pass the school bus… the school zone the speed limit is 20 mph so slow down, be alert keep your head up, keep your phones down."

AISD also just added $1.7 million worth of safety upgrades including five additional officers, a system for tracking students who ride the bus, and call boxes and more cameras at all high schools and middle schools.
