AUSTIN, Texas – A group of senior citizens is hoping to brighten the lives of thousands of troops overseas.

For some of the seniors, they know firsthand the impact a care package can have on service members abroad. North Austin senior living center, Buckner Villas, is putting together care packages for military members overseas.

Clay Kennedy is a retired Air Force chaplain and served in the military for nearly 30 years.

"There are times when you're away from home that you sometimes wonder - have I been forgotten? So those little items - it's just a good experience to receive something from people that says we're proud of what you're doing for our country," said Kennedy.

Residents collected donations like ChapStick, dental floss and gum. Many of the seniors even wrote letters by hand, expressing their gratitude to the service men and women.

"I was a military wife. I know how much my husband and son enjoyed letters and cards and care packages," said resident Charlyn Freehill.

The seniors said it’s the little things that can make a big impact.

"As I sign my name, my title, my military title, I'm saying to them here's a brother in arms that understands the sacrifice you're making for me," said Kennedy.
