AUSTIN, Texas – Additional affordable parking is available in downtown Austin for service-industry professionals starting on Monday.

The expansion of the Affordable Parking Program is the next stage of Austin’s parking strategy through a partnership between the city and the Downtown Austin Alliance. Their goal is relieve some of the financial burden faced by hospitality and tourism workers when they park downtown for work daily.

Evening parking will now be open at the City Hall garage and the One Texas Center garage, on Barton Springs Road. The additional parking has increased the number of affordable parking spaces under the program from 200 to 500 spaces.

However, to qualify for the Affordable Parking Program workers must submit an application to pay a monthly fee of $35 to $65. The $35 fee covers parking at the Waller Creek Center, City Hall and One Texas Center. The $65 fee covers parking at the State of Texas North Garage.

“Studies have shown that, on average, 30 percent of the cars in downtown traffic are looking for parking,” Dewitt Peart, president and chief executive officer of the Downtown Austin Alliance, said. “Having enough convenient, available parking spaces is critical to keeping traffic flowing as downtown continues to grow."
