AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Pets Alive needs help keeping animals cool amid record heat and failing air conditioners.

In a Facebook post on Monday the shelter said on-site A/C units are only bringing down temperatures two to three degrees. Many dogs had to be moved indoors or to foster homes to keep from overheating.

The shelter needs ice, coolers, box fans and monetary donations.

Staff onsite say the best way to help is to become a foster parent. Anyone who lives within 40 miles of APA! could become a two-week foster parent by filling out this application here.

"Just a temporary foster situation. We ask for two weeks. That'll be really helpful. While today is an extreme heat day, the rest of the week and coming weeks are still going to be hot so it'd be nice to get the animals into homes," said Hannah Horstman with Austin Pets Alive.

The Austin Pets Alive staff said they are working on a "major" campaign to pay for a brand new shelter.

Donations can be dropped off at Building A John Davenport Building.
