AUSTIN, Texas – As Austinites crank up the A/C during triple-digit days, the state just broke its record for highest electric demand ever.

The state’s biggest electrical grid, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, said power use is at an all-time high.

The demand peaked at more than 72,192 megawatts on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. and again between 4 and 5 p.m.

The former record was Aug. 11, 2016, with 71,110 megawatts.

One megawatt is enough electricity to power an estimated 200 homes running A/C in the summer.

ERCOT provides power to 24 million Texans.
