AUSTIN COUNTY, Texas – An explosion at a gas plant in Austin County prompted evacuations Tuesday shortly after 6 a.m.

The explosion was reported at the Western International Gas Plant, which is northeast of Bellville, Texas. No injuries were reported at the plant.

The Bellville Fire Department along with the Austin County Sheriff arrived on-scene in an attempt to control the fire, but toxic chemicals made it difficult to do so.

A five-mile radius around the plant was under a mandatory evacuation following the explosion. That has since been reduced to a one mile radius and authorities are letting people who live nearby back into their homes because they said the threat from the explosion has ended.

Austin County is right outside of Houston.
