AUSTIN, Texas – Commuters living or working in South Austin might want to change their morning route if it takes them on Interstate 35 while crews work on $79 million in changes.

Starting on Monday, the southbound I-35 exit to William Cannon will be shut down for construction. The William Cannon bridge over I-35 also shut down Sunday night, as the Texas Department of Transportation gets ready to build a new bridge.

Parts of the I-35 frontage road in both directions will also be closed. The construction is part of TxDOT's Mobility 35 Project, which aims to ease traffic congestion on I-35.

Changes include:

  • Widening main lanes and shoulders
  • Extended entrance and exit lanes
  • U-turn bridges on William Cannon Drive and Stassney Lane.

Most of the projects are expected to be finished by the end of the week. However, the northbound frontage road from William Cannon to Nelms Drive could take up to a month to be completed.
