FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- What would you do to help a friend in need?

  • Soldier walked dozens of miles with weights for two days
  • Walked from Raeford to Fayetteville
  • Program aims to raise awareness regarding veteran suicides

Over two days one special forces soldier walked 22 miles from Raeford to Fayetteville while carrying 220-pound weights on his back. Sergeant First Class Chris McHaugue had a special reason to endure that.

McHaugue walked to raise awareness and funds to combat the escalating problem of veteran suicides.

"22 veterans a day are killing themselves and we had to do something about it. And when a good friend of mine killed himself in 2016, I got involved and took over the chapter for 22 Until None, the Tar Heel Keepers, " he said on Saturday at the end of his journey.

22 Until None is a non-profit group that focuses on veteran suicides. It has 25 locations across the country.

Doing this took a great physical toll on this soldier. He says he lost a lot of skin on both of his feet and that it will take him about seven to 10 days to fully recover from this.
