SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas -- A family that survived the Sutherland Springs massacre is suing the United States government for negligence.

Margarette Vidal and her four children are plaintiffs in the complaint filed Wednesday.

The complaint said the U.S. Air Force knew the shooter had a prior domestic violence conviction and that he had been committed to a mental institution. The Air Force didn't submit this information to the FBI's background check system which could have prevented the shooter from buying a gun.

Vidal was shot four times.

She is asking for recovery of medical bills and past and future physical pain and suffering.
