AUSTIN — Police have identified a man shot and killed Wednesday as 19-year-old Devonte Ortiz.

According to Austin police, they received multiple calls from residents at the Pleasant Hills Apartment, just south of East Riverside, around 1:30 a.m., stating two men were arguing in the parking lot.

When they arrived at the scene, they found Ortiz with obvious trauma to his body.

Officers immediately began CPR and continued until Austin-Travis County EMS arrived and transported Ortiz to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. However, Ortiz was pronounced deceased at 2:12 a.m.

Witnesses told police the disturbance between the two men began because fireworks were being ignited in the apartment complex parking lot. They said the argument broke off but started again later when the fireworks continued. The second argument escalated to the point that both men displayed firearms.

Police said the two men were previously acquainted.
