AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police on Wednesday provided information concerning the arrest of a ride-share driver accused of kidnapping and sexual assault.

According to the Austin Police Department, officers responded to a call concerning a kidnapping just after 2 a.m. on Sunday, June 9, in the 4800 block of Sinclair Avenue, near the intersection of W. 49th Street and Burnet Road.

According to the victim and her companion, the two women had been drinking at several bars along 6th Street. They finished at Green Light Social, located at 720 W. 6th Street.

The victim was intoxicated, and they pair got into a vehicle they thought had been dispatched to pick them up.

The victim and the witness reported the driver – a tall, thin man – drove them to the victim’s address. It was there, the witness reported, that the driver drove off as she was exiting the vehicle, causing her to fall to the ground. The victim was still asleep in the vehicle.

The victim stated the driver took her to an unknown location where he attempted to sexually assault her.

On June 11, the Austin Police Department was notified by the Lakeway Police Department of a very similar crime in its jurisdiction. Police in Lakeway identified 45-year-old Daniel H. Kifle as the suspect.

On June 22, the witness picked Kifle out of a police lineup. On June 26, Austin police obtained search warrants asking ride-share companies Lyft and Uber for Kifle’s GPS locations on the night of the crime. Lyft provided those locations, indicating Kifle was in the area when the kidnapping and attempted sexual assault occurred.

Data showed Kifle logged off the Lyft app for about an hour, which corresponds to the time in which the crime occurred.

Kifle is charged with aggravated kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and kidnapping. All charges are felonies.
