WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas – A former pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Bertram is hospitalized following a car wreck that killed his wife and son.

The incident happened shortly after midnight at U.S. 183 and County Road 211. 

Authorities said two vehicles were following each other on U.S. 183 when another vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction crossed over the center line and struck both vehicles.

Sharon Johnson, 58, died at the scene. Her son was riding along with her and also died at the scene. Rev. Sheldon Ray Johnson was in the other vehicle and was transported to a hospital.

The driver of the car that crossed the center line, Sylvano Sanchez, 61, of Lampasas, was also transported to a hospital.

The Department of Public Safety is still investigating the collision.

 First United Methodist Church of Bertram released the following statement:

Please pray with me for Rev. Sheldon Ray Johnson. He is in ICU. He and his family were in a car accident last night. His wife and son were killed. Yesterday was Sheldon's first day of retirement as a United Methodist Pastor.
