GEORGETOWN, Texas — It's the end of an era for the Williamson County Sheriff's Posse. Their annual rodeo has been held at an open air stadium in Georgetown for 75 years.

Now the city of Georgetown has new plans for the land, and decided not to renew the lease for the group. That means the buck stops here for posse member Chris Dieckman.

“This is gonna be the last rodeo in this arena ever," Dieckman said.

There's a lot of memories here for Dieckman and his daughter Alexis.

"I rode when i was younger in this arena with the Sheriff’s posse drill team," he said. "My daughter rides with the drill team, my daughter runs barrels here and you know it’s like a second home to us.”

Chris has been with the Sheriff's Posse for years, and 16-year-old Alexis has worked horses in the stadium her entire life.

“We actually just found a picture of me and my dad," Alexis said. "I was probably like 2-months-old sitting on his horse right where we’re at right now, getting ready to ride the drill team.”

As Alexis saddled up for her final ride, folks on the outside tried to salvage a Georgetown tradition, 75 years in the making. A petition was made to convince the city government to let the rodeo stay.

“I like coming to rodeos," Georgetown resident Katie Anderson said as she offered the petition to people to sign. "I think that’s the spirit of Texas, and I don’t think that should be taken from our town.”

Despite their best efforts, it's likely the posse will have to find a new place to hold their annual rodeo. One that the Dieckman’s, and the rest of the Georgetown Rodeo fans could be proud of.

“This isn’t it, we’re not done," Alexis Dieckman said. "We’re leaving this area, this ground, but we’re not done.”
