AUSTIN, Texas — Months after Hurricane Maria Austin Humane Society is helping families reunite with their beloved animals after they were separated by the storm.

On Saturday, AHS along with Puerto Rico Animal Unite, JPB Foundation and St. Hubert’s Welfare Center flew the last of 65 pets to Austin at no cost to the pet owners. This is the third mission AHS has participated in.

The team at AHS met the plane at the airport, transported the animals back to the shelter for evaluation, and then reunited them with their families.

During the hurricane, many families were forced to leave their pets behind and relocate to the mainland where they’re working to rebuild their lives. This weekend, Roxy and Randy, two pug mixes were reunited with their owner. Their owner told AHS moving away from the island has been really difficult and while he is grateful for his job and new life here, it has been a hard transition. He said having Roxy and Randy back in his life now will make his family whole again. They have been waiting since December to get them here.
