AUSTIN, Texas – Some of the DNA evidence has been thrown out in the slaying of University of Texas student Haruka Weiser in 2016.

According to the Travis County Criminal Court Judge David Wahlberg, there were procedural issues with the way the evidence was gathered.

Weiser was found dead 100 feet away from her dorm room in Waller Creek on April 3, 2016. The suspect, homeless teen Meechaeil Criner, was indicted on capital murder charges after he was found with a duffel bag of her belongings and was captured on surveillance video in the area at the time she was murdered.

An autopsy reported determined that Weiser had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

Jury selection will begin on July 9.
