GALVESTON, Texas – A mother and her girlfriend have been arrested and charged in the death of a young boy found dead on Galveston Beach.

The young boy, believed to be 3 or 5 years old, was discovered washed ashore on Oct. 20, 2017. For months investigators could not identify the boy or determine what happened to him.

The boy was named “Little Jacob” by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On Wednesday, June 20. the FBI announced that it finally learned “Little Jacob’s” real name and identified him as Jayden Alexander Lopez.

"No one reported Jayden as missing. No one was looking for Jayden. We had to become his advocate," said FBI Supervisory Special Resident Agent Bryan Gaines.

Investigators determined that Jayden’s mother and her girlfriend both had knowledge of his death. They are also believed to have been present when his body was left on the beach.

Both of the women are currently in Galveston County Jail.

"This case has been immensely difficult to work for our Special Agents who are parents. While our job is to investigate these types of crimes, it is especially difficult when the victim is a defenseless child," Gaines said.
