AUSTIN, Texas -- With the summer season in full swing and more people out cooling off in the water, Travis County health officials want to stress the importance of water safety.

New data reveals an average of 14 people in Travis County drown each year.

There were a total of 140 unintentional drownings between 2007 and 2016. Children ages 1 to 4 account for the highest rate of drownings. Most of the incidents happened in swimming pools. Health experts warn parents to be especially careful with young kids around water.

"Putting barriers around swimming pools, spas, gates, things like that, fences. Then you also want to educate people on how to swim. You want to also educate people on lifesaving skills like CPR, things like that,” said Dr Phil Huang, Austin Public Health.

The study also revealed that men were twice as likely to drown than women.
