STATESVILLE, N.C. -- An officer was shot in the back Friday night in an apparent ambush.

  • A bullet-proof vest saved horn from any serious injuries
  • Investigators are still trying to identify a suspect

Police say Officer Tyler Horn was shot while on patrol with another officer on Raleigh Avenue and Fifth Street. This all happened around 11 p.m.

A bullet-proof vest saved horn from any serious injuries.

Police say the suspect was behind them and fired multiple times in their direction, hitting horn once.

He was released from the hopital, early Saturday morning.

One man who lives near the area says police are on foot patrol there all the time.

"I was inside watching TV and I heard the 'pow, pow, pow, pow'. I went to the back door and looked out, didn't see anybody anywhere. I went back in the house thinking someone was just firing a gun."

Investigators are still trying to identify a suspect.
