An active priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester facing an allegation of sexual abuse has been relieved of his pastoral duties.

Father Thomas Valenti asked Bishop Salvatore Matano to be relieved of his duties in order to address the matter.

This comes just a week after it was revealed that several priests in the Rochester Catholic Diocese allegedly sexually abused children decades ago.

Attorney Mitch Garabedian was in Rochester last Wednesday and released the names of eight priests he says sexually abused at least 17 children. Some of the names had not been made public before.

The accusers are now in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.

Since last week's news conference, 16 more alleged victims have come forward, according to Garabedian.

Carol DuPre, 71, says she was abused in the early 1960s by Father G. Stuart Hogan, who was then at St. Gregory Church in Marion.

"I was a very innocent kid. I didn't know what to do with what was going on with me. And when I finally had the nerve to tell my mother, she was shocked. My mother was a writer and she wrote a letter to the Diocese of Rochester.  She may have made phone calls. I don't know everything that she did, but do I know that she was ignored."

"We were told that Catholic priests were like God in the flesh to us, and God abused me and that isn't something God would do. I have struggled my whole life to identify with a good and loving God," said DuPre.

Garabedian has asked the Diocese to release any and all documents connected to abuse.

Carol says she called the Diocese, who told her there was no record of her abuse being reported. Carol says she believes coming forward will help others do the same and heal.

The Diocese released a statement on Thursday:

"We welcome Mr. Garibedian’s participation in our process on behalf of Mrs. Carol DuPré."
