AUSTIN, Texas — The rewrite of Austin's land development code is still being hotly debated — Four members of the city's Zoning and Platting Commission, penned an open letter to show their support for the process known as CodeNEXT.

CodeNEXT will guide what's allowed to be built in Austin for the next generation. The group of Zoning and Platting Commissioners said their colleagues spent weeks complaining about land use, but the problems cited are with the existing code.

Commissioner Abigail Tatkow says she supports changes made by the Planning Commission because, by and large, she said the CodeNEXT drafts written by the consultants didn't reflect broad community feedback.

"Despite the fact that there has been a lack of incorporation of the public will in many instances and the public feedback in this process, there are individuals who are listening,” Tatkow said.

Tatkow had to dive head first into CodeNEXT, having been appointed to the Zoning and Platting Commission in January.

She says it's vital the discussion move beyond talking points for and against the code, and focus on solutions.

Critics of CodeNEXT sued the city last week, demanding Austin let voters decide.
