AUSTIN -- Saint David's in South Austin is getting certified as a Level 2 Trauma Center.

The designation means that people who need specific medical care, especially those involved in serious crashes, will have better access.

"We have a dedicated shock trauma ICU just for trauma patients. We have a dedicated step down unit, which is called a trauma care unit just for trauma patients. In addition to that we have a wing of the hospital floor that is dedicated just tor trauma patients. We have a dedicated trauma OR, 24-7,” said Dr. Ernest Gonzalez, of St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.

Saint David's is in a high-traffic area of Ben White between MoPac and I-35. The designation comes less than a week after St. David's North Austin Medical center was designated as the first Level 4 epilepsy center to treat both adults and children in Central Texas.
